Watcher Headquarters. Seacouver.
Abigail Maloney, or Abbie to her friends; awoke to a dark gray rainy day. She had arrived in Seacouver three days ago and her first assignment was to know the area.
She had been set up in a spare bedroom at the HQ and had been given a small office, until she gets a place of her own. She flipped on her laptop, dressed and headed downstairs to the small kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee and adding two sugars. She made small talk with other Watchers. Some wished her good luck on her new Assignment and others were friendly.
Returning to her room she logged into the Watcher website and checked the usual reports. She answered a few inter-departmental emails. Then she turned her attention to a section on the website labeled Dangerous Immortals.
It read:
[Reporting whereabouts of Amaunatur Cain. Last spotted in Cairo International Airport. Possibly heading to North America, maybe even Europe. If spotted STAY CLEAR of him and alert local section. Danger Level: Apex. -Danvers]
Abbie pulled up the file on Anaunatur Cain. Apparently he bragged to be more than six thousand years old. His M.O was that he believed that Immortals were an abomination against God and Cain hunted other Immortals mercilessly. In short, Abbie surmised...he was a hunter pure and simple.
She closed the file and thought about the chances of an Immortal like Cain showing up nearby could be? His profile read like a biography of Vlad Tepes. Cutting down Immortals left and right by one means or another. He was a maniac with a cause, that made him dangerous.
Shutting off the laptop Abbie left Headquarters and got into her new Pontiac Sunfire. She drove to a supermarket to pick up some items, and then drove to Galen MacQueen's office not only to check up on her assignment, but to see how he was doing overall.

Galen MacQueen was up to his elbows in paperwork and meetings.
He was scheduled to be in court in the afternoon for opening arguments concerning his client: A female who was divorcing her husband due to irreconcilable differences and financial woes. He talked to the opposing council, a Ms. Jayne Sebastian about a quick out of court settlement, but she along with her client refused. For Galen, it looked to be a long day.
His morning work was interrupted as he felt the buzz of another Immortal. Before Galen could look up, he heard a knock on his already open door. She was an African-American woman with light brown hair and black eyes. Her suit spoke 'congresswoman' and her smile was broad. She held a stryofoam tray with two coffees in it.
"Hello Councilor." She greeted. "It's been awhile."
Galen rose to his feet, returned the smile. "Kalina Price. Long time no see."
Kalina walked over to Galen's desk and set the coffees down. She hugged Galen tightly.
"Oh god, I've missed you MacQueen. Still practicing I see."
"Good to see you too." Galen replied. "How's Congress?"
They broke the embrace and Kalina sat down in a chair across from the desk, and taking a coffee.
"Dull." She replied. "Nothing is getting done, it's all war all the time."'
"Sorry to hear that. You on vacation?" Galen took the remaining coffee, opened the lid and took a sip.
Kalina laughed. "I wish. I'm here on other matters."
"Like what?" He wondered.
"Amaunatur Cain." Kalina replied, grimly. "He's in town."
Galen almost dropped the coffee. He hadn't heard that name in over 800 years, and everytime he did, it sent chills down his spine.
"You're certain?"
Kalina nodded. She took another sip of her coffee. "He tried to kill me on a diplomatic mission in Cairo. Luckily some Secret Sercivemen made him change his mind. I tracked him to the airport and paid heavily for his departing location. Galen, he's here."
Galen took the second empty chair, next to her. "You think he knows where we're at?"
"I don't know." She said sincerely. "I just don't believe it was random chance that he found me. Chances are I could have just led him to you right now."
Galen sighed. "I was hoping someone...anyone would have killed him by now."
"So do I." Kalina admitted. "But he's become more powerful that I could have guessed. To be honest, I'm not sure if anyone can defeat him."

Jerusalem, 1097: The Crusades.
Two years into the conflict and Galen wished he could just go home. He stood on horseback with his fellow soldiers as they all looked out towards the hordes of Selijuk Turks. They were bloodthristy, angry, total barbarians one and all. The Turks wouldn't be content until the crusaders were obliterated and the Holy Land under total Muslim control. And for two years since the conflict began, Galen and the men he commanded held their post.
Once the signal was given and the horn blown on the side of the Turks, they ran towards the foreigners with swords, and spears at the ready. Galen unsheathed his sword and commanded his troops into battle. Both sides running towards one another like a freight train collision. He cut through many Turkish troops as the Turks slaughtered his own men.
The conflict lasted hours. Galen's forces managed to hold they're position. Until the Turks would regroup for another attack. That night was spent feasting and giving thanks to God that they were still alive, for the moment.
The next morning as Galen patrolled, he felt the presence of another Immortal. The area however, was clear of anyone until he was knocked off his horse and the blade of a dark longsword come swinging at his direction. Galen rolled to the left and got to his feet. His sword instantly in his hands.
The other man was huge; about seven feet. His grey eyes pierced into Galen's soul. His blond hair was long and dirty along with his clothes.
"I am Cain." he greeted, pointing his sword at Galen. "And for the glory of God, you shall perish."
Galen remained silent. He swung his blade at the giant Immortal who deflected the blow. Amaunatur swiped at Galen who blocked him. The giant was quick and Galen had trouble defending himself. Cain's blade soon found itself in Galen's ribs. He fell to his knees, struggling to breathe as Amaunatur ripped his blade from Galen's side and raised his sword for the final strike.
The next thing Galen saw was a speartip protrude from Cain's chest. Amaunatur looked at the speartip for awhile then also fell to his knees, blood trickling from his mouth.
"Another time..demon." Amaunatur wheezed, he fell to the ground apparently dead as some of Galen's troops rushed to the rescue.
He was taken back to camp and made an amazing recovery. He stayed in the Holy Land, performing his duty and searching out Amaunatur Cain, who had left the area for parts unknown.
Ever since that first encounter with the insane Immortal, Galen never allowed himself to forget the encounter. And as much as he hoped it was the last encounter, his hopes would be dashed centuries later.

The present.
Kalina looked deeply at Galen. "Can you promise me something Galen? As one of my best friends?"
Galen got up from his seat and paced his office. "I'm not so sure I can taken him Kalina, I hear tidbits about him from time to time. How he's taken out some of the most powerful of us..."
She looked at Galen, puzzled. "What?"
"You want me to fight him instead of you right?"
She rose from the chair and walked over to him, holding his hands.
"No Galen. I didn't come here to ask for protection."
'What then?"
Kalina cleared her throat.
"In the event that he...that I fall to him-"
"No Kalina, wait-"
"Hear me out Galen please. If he kills me, promise me you'll do whatever it takes to stop him. Whatever it takes."
Galen remained silent, continuing to stare at her.
Kalina continued. "This is what Mathayus trained you for Artorius. You and I have a chance to stop him here and now."
"And if he kills us both, what then?"
"Then heaven help those still alive." Kalina replied. SHe looked at her watch.
"I need to go, but I'll call you later ok?"
Galen nodded. Kalina hugged him one last time and left his office. He also had business of his own to take care of. During the drive to the courthouse he kept thinking on what she had asked. Kalina Price had been there from almost the very beginning. He made an inner voe that he'd try to protect her from Cain, even if he had to give up his life to do so.
He didn't like the idea of headhunting, but in the case of Amaunatur Cain, Galen saw no choice in the matter.

Rural England, 186 AD.
"Remember." Mathayus instructed, as he and Galen were sparring. "Keep your eyes not only on your oppenent's blade, but his eyes as well. Be able to read into them and try to guess his next move even before he's had time to know himself."
The two wooden blades slapped against each other in quick secession. Galen was still a novice, but being a Roman officer helped his skills greatly. Still at the end of it, Mathayus defeated him, although now Mathayus was finding it more difficult to defeat his student.
"You're hard to read. " Galen admitted. "But you've had centuries more experience than me." He blocked a overhead strike and held his teacher's blade at bay.
"When I was a assassin," Mathayus began. "I had to learn more than simple swordplay, I learned to kill with my bare hands and with arrows. I also had to learn to improvise."
Mathayus stepped on Galen's feet, breaking concentration Galen was disarmed and Mathayus' blade at Galen's throat.
"You still fight as a Roman centurion, but the rules are different now. You can't expect other Immortals to follow Roman rules of combat. Your gladius will only protect you so much."
"What else do you suggest I do?" Galen asked.
"Learn as many forms of combat as you can." Mathayus explained. "You will come across others who will be highly skilled and more educated. They'll hate Romans especially."
"Half Roman." Galen corrected.
Mathayus took the wooden swords and set them aside next to their horse. "That won't matter. Before I was a king I was an Akkadian. I lived by taking lives. I'm not too proud of it now but back then it was what my people did. When I was king I united lower and upper Egypt. I had help and I ruled justly. If I could I'd go back to Rome and instruct your emperor how to rule better than he has."
"It will get better." Galen said. "Tell me, who has been your toughest opponent?"
Mathayus brushed off the grass and dirt off of his uniform. "He remains a dark hearted warrior. I only met him once but I'll never forget what he said to me."
"That was?" Galen asked as he and his teacher mounted their horses and began the trek back into the nearest town.
"He said I was an abomination against the one true God. If he knew who I truly was he would have quaked in fear. However he proved to be a tough fighter, we fought and I would have won except for he fled. I never saw him again."
"You remember his name?"
Mathayus shook his head. "No. But I think he's still out there, gaining power and becoming stronger. Pray you don't meet up with him."
The two Immortals stopped at an inn and ate lunch. They never discussed Mathayus' adversary again. Even for as long as Mathayus trained the young Immortal no word of it was brought up.

(Of course. ;D )
Galen lunched at the hot dog stand right outside the courthouse. He sat on the steps of said courthouse and deliberated inwardly the events of the session.
The opposing council's claim was that Galen's client was obliged to pay a sum of $250,000 for 'emotional distress' and the ownership of a house in California. Galen argued that his Client didn't owe anything because she had worked hard for what she acquired and since he had documented proof that everything was in his client's name, it was an open and shut case.
Still hungry, he went back to the stand and ordered a chili dog and a Pepsi. He resumed his spot on the steps of the courthouse. Going over every course of action he had taken. Divorce cases were messy and at times tricky affairs. He enjoyed the cases that were civil and loathed the ones that were messy.
And if he thought he was going to enjoy the rest of a fairly decent day, he was mistaken. He mistook the buzz of another Immortal with that of Kalina Price. That was his first mistake. He looked up and over across the street to see the man with long blond hair and dark gray eyes, the beard he wore woven in an old Norse style. He wore black dress shoes, light gray khakis, a black button down shirt tucked inside the pants, and a black trenchcoat. When Galen noticed him the man pointed directly at him and smiled grimly.
"Jesus." MacQueen whispered. "Amaunatar Cain."
He rose from the steps, threw away the partially eaten hot dog and Pepsi in a nearby trashcan, the crossed the street to where Cain stood.
"You've got nerve showing up here." Galen said, doing his best to hold his ground and trying to steady his nerves. He felt afraid.
Amaunatar continued to smile. "Have you converted to the word of the living God and made penance for your sinful ways whoreson?"
After all this time, Galen thought to himself. That madness within Cain's eyes was still there.
"Don't presume to get pious with me. Galen ordered. "You're a demented lunatic with delusions of grander. Don't utter a syllable of God's name."
"Such words from a cursed one. I shall take your head slowly. Yes, I think you'll fell it as my blade cuts every nerve and tendon. Then you'll be inside me-"
Galen's right hand went directly to Cain's throat. He squeezed. Amaunatar smiled with glee, he grabbed Galen's wrist then tugged forcefully, releasing his neck from Galen's grip.
"Whenever you're ready." MacQueen suggested.
"In due time. Until then make your peace, for I will send you to hell where you rightfully belong."
Amaunatar walked away, leaving Galen standing there. Inwardly MacQueen was shaking. He wanted to pee his pants, clenching his fists tightly he walked back inside the courthouse and entered the restroom.
Abbie had witnessed the whole encounter. She hid in plain sight and marveled at MacQueen's self restraint. Cain was huge and towered Galen by a foot. When the encounter was finished, Abbie drove back to Watcher headquarters and made a full report.

Later on that evening Kalina drove to Seacouver beach, dusk was settling and the blue sky overhead was turning purple and the clouds from white to pink. She came to take her mind off events earlier. She wished that she had told Galen happier news, and with Cain being after her she wondered how much time she had left until she ran into him..or vice versa.
She took a few deep breaths and reached for her cell phone and dialed Galen's office number. he picked up on the second ring.
"MacQueen." He greeted. "How may I help you?"
Kalina laughed. "Very unprofessional. How do you get clients?"
"Thank goodness you're alive." Galen replied. Sighing with relief.
"Let me guess, Cain?"
Galen filled her in on the encounter, it was a bit difficult to hear her over the sounds of the waves and seagulls.. "He's even more crazier than I last remembered. Possibly more powerful. Where are you?"
"Beach." She answered. "It's quiet out here and it gives me time to think."
"Come back to the office." Galen offered. "I'll protect you."
"Sorry Galen. But I think I'll take my chances."
"Kalina-" He protested.
"Listen to me Galen. If he finds me, he finds me. I've lived an awfully long time and I have no regrets. Remember what Mathayus and I taught you-"
Her words were interrupted as she felt the presence of another Immortal nearby. Kalina looked around the area she was at. In a few moments Amaunatur Cain appeared. His huge black blade in his hands.
"It's about time you showed up." She greeted.
Galen was on his feet within seconds, damning the distance between his office and the beaches. "He's there??? Kalina, get out!"
Kalina turned her back to Cain. "Pay attention Artorius." She snapped. "I'll do what I can and if you don't hear back from me, remember two things. The first being live and grow stronger. The second is that I love you. Live free and die well Artorius."
She cut the connection, pocketed the phone and unsheathed her broadsword. On the other side of the city Galen ran out of his office and into his Volvo. Doing his best to Seacouver's shoreline and not violating any traffic laws.
"I missed you in Cairo." Cain said, pointing his sword at her.
"Shame you cam all this way to die." Kalina replied, then giving Amaunatur Cain the middle finger. "And this is such a good locale for it too."
"Enough talk!" Cain commanded. "Prepare to die."
They were only a few feet away. Suddenly the two Immortals charged at each other like jousting duelists.

Galen quickly found a parking spot at Seavouver's beach. It was massive, he had no idea where to start first but as he stepped foot onto the sands he went left. Mostly because Kalina was left handed. He walked about a mile in that direction until he felt the presence of an Immortal, switching from a brisk walk to a jog he quickly ran towards Kalina just standing there looking out to sea. Tears in her eyes.
As she saw Galen, Kalina tried to smile but she found that she couldn't. MacQueen put his arms around her and held her tightly.
"Thank God you're still alive." He said. Kissing her forehead. "Are you ok?"
Kalina shook inwardly then broke down. She cried on Galen's chest and wrapped her arms around him tightly.
"He had me.." She sobbed. "...he-he could have taken my head but he put up his sword and deemed me unworthy.. not pure."
Galen didn't say anything but let her continue on.
"That self righteous bastard actually had the nerve to judge me on my skin color."
"Come on." Galen soothed. "I'll take you back to my place."
"Galen, I hate him. I hate him more than I've ever hated anyone."
"Let it go Kalina. He made his choice."
Galen took Kalina back to his house. He made her dinner and then made up the spare bedroom for her. As Kalina slept Galen sharpened his sword. He couldn't figure out why Cain broke from his usual M.O. But Galen could suspect one thing, Amaunatur Cain had probably changed his mind: Kalina wasn't on his list anymore.
And if Amaunatur were bold enough to come after Galen, so be it. Killing Kalina would have been a mistake. It would have given Galen valid reason for good old fashion revenge. Now it would be a public service. He had no doubt that Cain was powerful. He was downright scary but he was also pure evil and if Amaunatur Cain wasn't stopped here and now then God help the next Immortal to come across him. Seacouver had a very powerful madman in it's midst and MacQueen had to something about it.
Galen looked at his blade, It would be sharp enough. Mathauys once told Galen that the true Immortal's power is based off three things: Heart, Faith, and Steel. Steel he had; faith and heart he'd have to work on.
Galen put the sword away, and looked out to the city skyline. He prayed that Amaunatur would find him. One way or another, it was going to end.

It was the next afternoon. After having the case go his way Galen decided to remain in the downtown area. He reflected back on the session. He brought ample evidence that backed his client's claim. Produced documented signatures of both parties and stated that the prenuptial papers were accurate.
Jayne thanked him and told Galen that if she could do anything for him in the future all he had to do was name it. Galen said that he'd call her at the end of the week and the two parted off as friends.
He lunched at a nearby Subway, eating a meatball sub with all the fixings. When he noticed the buzz of a nearby Immortal he calmly threw out his sandwich and soda then walked out of the restaurant.
He knew it wasn't Kalina. He had suggested to her that she stay inside his place and that she should call the cops if Cain showed up at his doorstep. Galen's address wasn't listed in the phone book yet so the possibility was slim, but it was still a possibility.
Abbie had also decided to tail Galen. She did her best to keep a respectful distance and yet also to keep him within eyesight. She saw him walk into a nearby church. She followed and sat near the back, keeping to the dim atmosphere of shadow and candles.
It didn't take long for Amaunatur Cain to enter the church also. Abbie kept her head down in hopes that she wouldn't be noticed. Cain went to the alter and outstretched his arms in a Christ-like pose.
"Behold the Son of Man!" He exclaimed, turning to Galen. "Acknowledge him accursed one."
"I have." Galen hissed. "And keep your voice down."
The two Immortals stared down at each other. Both of them trying to measure the other up.
"You spared my friend's life." MacQueen said. "So I'm obliged to offer you the chance to leave town and never return."
Cain laughed, loudly.
"This town isn't under your protection. As a matter of fact I'm thinking of staying."
"Then you'll die." Galen said, flatly.
Cain shook his head. "It is you who will die. Very soon now."
"You think I'm afraid of you?" Galen asked. "You're nothing but a lunatic who just runs off at the mouth."
"I AM THE LEFT HAND OF GOD!!" Amaunatur exclaimed. "I was there when Babylon fell, when Sodom was smitten..it's citizens turned to salt. I'm the one who caused Pompeii to sink to the oceans. God has charged me to dispose the likes of you and your kind. Only then can I accept his grace and mercy."
Galen wasn't impressed. "Allow me to tell you who you face. You're going to die by the hands of the man who united all of Britain. I helped defeat the Saxons back to their homelands and throughout history I've aided Britain in it's darkest hours. When we meet on the battle field mark my face well for it will be the last thing you see on this earth."
"Tonight you'll sleep in hell." Cain remarked, he turned and walked out of the church.
'So be it.' Galen thought. He remained by the alter and said a silent prayer. As he walked out he couldn't find any trace of Amaunatur Cain, he felt relieved.
Abbie approached him, tapping him on his shoulder.
"Excuse me sir?" She asked. Galen turned and faced her. "Do you know how I get to the train Stati-"
"Not now please." Galen remarked, he turned from her and walked a few steps away.
Abbie let an exasperated sigh. She closed her eyes, clenched her fists. Feeling guilty for what she was about to do.
"Artorius!" She exclaimed. Galen froze and turned to her once again. His eyes wide. He slowly walked towards her.
"Do I have your attention now?" She asked.
"Who are you and what do you know?" Galen asked. Stoping in his tracks and wondering who this young lady knows.
Abbie sighed, she was lucky and glad no one else was around to hear what she was going to say.. "I know that you are Arthur, king of the Britons. That you've been alive for well over a thousand years and can only die if your head is cut from your neck. You struggle in a game where only one can remain, but your destiny lies more with your people and to your homeland. You are far far too important to lose."
Surprise was written all over Galen's face. "We have to talk. Right now." He told her.

"So what you're telling us-" Kalina replied. "-is that mortals know of us and have been observing our activities?"
Galen had taken Abbie back to his apartment. Introductions and coffee was made and Abbie informed both Immortals about The Watcher Society. Galen and Kalina both listened to Abbie's story attentively.
Abbie confessed. "We simply watch and record, we never interfere in a battle."
"How long has this organization been around?" Galen asked.
Abbie shrugged. "Thousands of years. I'm not sure of any origin date. We know that you're the source of the Arthur legend and have kept that secret safe. We also know that Kalina is a year older than Methos and that-"
"What about Amaunatur Cain?" Galen asked. "What do your Watchers know of him?"
"Just as much as you all do. He's on our danger list actually with a few other names."
"Who else?" Kalina wondered.
Abbie shook her head. "Sorry, I'm not permitted to tell."
Galen sighed. "You mean you can't tell us if what he claims is even true?"
"We know as much as you do. He pops up from time to time, takes a few heads, then goes back underground."
"So you can't help us?" Kalina asked.
"Not in an official sense no." Abbie suggested.
Kalina didn't understand. "What do you mean?"
"She means on the record she can't help, but perhaps if..let's say that this conversation is not even happening.." Galen replied.
"...then perhaps I can make a few calls and find out where he's at." Abbie finished.
Galen laughed and Kalina smiled.
"However Galen." Abbie finished. "You'll owe me a sit down. I have questions. It's not everyday I get to actually stand..er, sit five inches from one of England's treasured monarchs."
Galen considered it. "Fine." He agreed. "Just as long as the information doesn't get out of Watcher circles, understood?"
"Agreed." Abbie replied. She stood to leave Galen gave her his business card, writing his home number on the back. Abbie pocketed it and went to the door.
"I'll call just as soon asI have something." She promised, opening the front door then closing it behind her.
"Can she be trusted?" Kalina wondered.
"At this moment I'm more concerned with stopping Cain than a covert group of archivists. Soon he'll grow too powerful for any Immortal to face alone."
Kalina stood from the chair she was sitting in and walked over to hug Galen.
"I don't like it Galen. You facing that madman alone. What if this is the last time we see each other."
Galen kissed her on the cheek. "Have faith Kalina." He whispered. "I'll do whatever I can to bring him to an end. However if I fail it's up to you and the rest of the Immortals to stop him.We can't let him go on his killing sprees."
"Just be careful." Kalina replied. "For both our sakes."
Galen took Kalina out to dinner then to the airport. He paid for her flight back home and just as he approached his car after seeing that Kalina got on her plane his phone rang.
"Hello?"
"I've got him. It wasn't easy but I know where he's at." Abbie said on the other end of the line.
"Where?" Galen asked, hurriedly.
"Got a pen and paper?" Abbie asked. As soon as Galen did she gave him Cain's address.

Galen found Cain later that evening in the park, praying. The sun turning a bright red and the skies a light shade of purple. When Amaunatur felt the buzz in his head he stood, turned to see Galen with sword in hand. He remained where he was but his eyes bulged.
"I'm unarmed." Cain said. "Today is my sabbath. I won't fight."
"You expect me to care?" Galen asked, unconvinced.
Amaunatur removed his gray trenchcoat, proving that he was unarmed.
"There's your proof." He said, turning his back to MacQueen.
"Can't." Galen answered, shrugging his shoulders. He gripped the handle of the heron-mark sword and steeled his nerves for what he was preparing to do.
"No challenge has been issued MacQueen, now for the last time pis-"
Amaunatur Cain's words were cut short, as Galen screamed and swung his blade, severing Amaunatur's head from the rest of his body. Cain's final look was one of surprise. He didn't see the attack or expect it to even come.
For Galen, he wished Cain had his sword. He took no pride or pleasure in what he just done. To him it was the equivalent of fighting dirty. But he made a promise to Kalina that one way or another he'd try to stop Cain once and for all.
As the Quickening absorbed itself into Galen's body, he saw Cain's life of terror from start to finish. MacQueen hated all that evil flowing and pulsing to inside him. Trees were either uprooted or had caught fire. Nearby lamp posts exploded in furious rage. Water fountains bursting and the ground itself splitting.
The quickening lifted Galen and spun him, as it ended it harshly threw MacQueen to the ground. He fought with his muscles to get to his feet and retrieve his sword. A crowd would be showing up anytime. He cast a final glance at Cain's corpse and made the sign of the cross.
Galen took a long way back to his car, making sure no one spotted him or his sword. He drove back home, parked his car, grabbed his sword and entered his house. Crashing on the nearest couch at hand.

Galen got little sleep that night. The images of Cain, his life and death playing on and on in his dreams repeatedly. He woke up around five O clock and decided to just stay awake. He went downstairs, dressed in his bathrobe and went to the kitchen to make breakfast. He turned on a small radio, wondering if the beheading had caught the attention of the news agencies. Surprisingly, nothing was said except for some electrical storm messing up a small part of a neighborhood park. Nothing about any murder or public panic or cries of outrage.
Nothing.
He cooked pancakes and an omelet, made coffee and walked over to his living room and sat down. Eating slowly and thinking about yesterday.
Galen wondered why Cain wasn't armed? He should have been, even if it was his sabbath day a warrior like him would have some weapon nearby. Galen couldn't figure it out. More importantly, he wondered if it was wrong to just 'mow down' an unarmed man..even if the man was a demented killer?
MacQueen decided that it would be the last time it would happen. From then on out if his opponent was unarmed he'd wait. He hated what he did yesterday, but yet something inside him told him to do it.
He spent the rest of the morning watching MSNBC. Showered, shaved, and headed off to work. He didn't have any appointments today so it looked like a follow up day for him. 'Good.' He thought. A sense of normalcy would be refreshing.
Abbie knocked on his office door, smiling and bringing a plate of cupcakes. She sat in one of the two chairs across his desk and handed him a cupcake.
"You're wanting a divorce?" Galen asked.
"Nope. Single and plan on staying that way for a while." Abbie answered. "I'm here to check up on you."
"I'm fine." MacQueen answered. "I guess I can thank you of the body removal?"
Abbie nodded. "Watcher specialty. What the public doesn't know they'll be much more happier."
"Thanks."
"No no. Thank you Galen. You rid the world of one evil bastard."
Galen sighed. "Somehow it didn't feel right."
Abbie raised her left eyebrow. "Meaning?"
"There should have been a fight, a duel to see which one of us would walk away, but he was unarmed."
"Galen, trust me on this one ok? No one will care how it was done. If it was luck or divine providence don't question it. Amaunatur Cain was a walking talking plague. One the rest of my people get the report they'll be partying all through Christmas-"
Galen shook his head doubtfully.
"Ok, that was a bit of a stretch." Abbie went on. "Sure there are more like him out there and yes you'll have to fight them but at least you won't have to worry about Cain darkening your doorstep anymore. In our book, you did the right thing."
She stood to leave.
"Make peace with it Galen MacQueen. Don't let the guilt swallow you. You're one of our great hopes. More will come: it doesn't matter if they do today or tomorrow or next week. All that's really important is that you keep living. Remember: live and grow stronger."
Abbie left without giving Galen anything to rebuke. To Galen, Abbie made sense even if it seemed senseless to him. Others will be coming. Even if it was just a one time act of either God or divine powers at work, chances are he wouldn't be getting another chance like he had.
MacQueen wondered if it was going to get rougher from here? If it did then he decided he'd try his best to be prepared.
The End.
